The Cloverfield Paradox was notable more for the genius way it was marketed rather than for its own quality. Dropped immediately after the Super Bowl following a big game spot revealing what it actually was, it picked up a cleverly manipulated hype boost that a conventional marketing campaign simply wouldn't have done.

That was particularly useful to Netflix, because The Cloverfield Paradox was not very good. It was derivative, messy and just a little too boring for its own good. It also appeared to have been shoe-horned into the Cloverfield universe for the sake of another cynical marketing push.
