7. It Comes At Night

The second feature from Trey Edward Shults (Krisha) may have been mis-sold to audiences as a conventional post-apocalyptic horror film, but as long as you go in knowing that It Comes at Night is an exercise in slow, quiet unease, there's plenty here to savour.

Joel Edgerton and Christopher Abbott give memorable performances in this hauntingly bleak horror-thriller about two family units trying to shelter themselves from a contagious outbreak plaguing the outside world.

Emotions run high, people die, and Shults' restrained approach, albeit with occasional surreal flourishes, ensures that this is a one-of-a-kind entry despite its familiar subject matter.
