15 Insane Movies That Shouldn't Have Worked
1. The Holy Mountain (1973)
The Holy Mountain is Alejandro Jodorowsky's acid-tipped surrealist fantasy epic about a group of people attempting to reach the titular mountain, which they believe will grant them spiritual enlightenment.
With its array of puerile, disturbing and straight-up weird imagery, some might dismiss the film as odd for odd's sake, but there is a seductive, even amusing power to Jodorowsky's film, which willfully perverts the form of both religion and filmmaking, no doubt a consequence of the director taking LSD for the first time while prepping the project.
There's an almost sensorily overwhelming array of images hurled at the viewer - lizards dressed as conquistadors ranking among the more tame yet hilarious visuals on display - but above all else it's something you won't soon forget.
That alone stakes its merit as worthy of existing, though for many it walks a fine line between brilliant and bulls***. Either way, Jodorowsky flipped off the establishment with a mind-melting vision that'll still be talked about in another 50 years.
