Director Gaspar Noe is best known for his highly controversial 2002 film Irreversible, but his 2009 follow-up in many ways made that film look like an episode of Pee-wee's Playhouse.

Enter the Void transpires from the first-person perspective of a man (Nathaniel Brown) who is shot by police during a drug raid and has an out-of-body experience, chronicling his life from beginning to its seeming end.

With its tough-to-quantify premise, confronting themes (including incest) and shocking imagery (an up-close CGI visual of a penis ejaculating inside a woman's vagina), Enter the Void will no doubt repulse as many as it enthralls.

However, the stylistic execution of Noe's vision is undeniable in its flair and confidence: every frame of the film, from its delirious opening titles to its jaw-dropping final shot, reflects an auteur in full control of their craft.
