Mad Max Fury Road might seem like a strange - or even controversial - entry on a list of pure cinema movies, but judged on the central tenets of the style of filmmaking it becomes clear that it covers many of the key elements required. As with all great pure cinema, Mad Max: Fury Road is sparse with its dialogue and rarely uses it simply for exposition. Similarly, the plot is relatively simple and discards the narrative complexity of more mainstream movies, and what storytelling there is is told almost entirely through the carefully composed visuals. Mad Max: Fury Road may be "just" an action movie, but it is one driven (if you'll pardon the pun) by a heightened appreciation of aesthetics, masterful framing and crystal clear editing more than worthy of the label "pure cinema". It's certainly a claim few other mainstream action movies can make.
