And finally, if there's one movie that looks dumb but is actually ridiculously clever, it's Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
A parody of the Holy Grail legend featuring knights who pretend to ride horses while servants make trotting noises with coconuts behind them, featuring the shrubbery-obsessed knights who say "Ni!", featuring the knights of Camelot performing musical theater and featuring a psycho-killer rabbit... it sounds absolutely ridiculous. It sounds like a Frieberg and Seltzer spoof, yet this is actually one of the very greatest film comedies ever created.
You see, as ridiculous as Monty Python and the Holy Grail often is, it's an extremely well-constructed film comedy put together by one of the all-time greatest comedy troupes - which was, let's not forget, mostly made up of well-educated Oxbridge grads.
Pretty much every single joke in this film is an unpredictable, clever and devastatingly funny nugget of comedic gold. Much like with The Naked Gun films, it takes a lot of skill to make such a silly story so unbelievably hysterical (most similar film parodies are complete failures after all) but this movie pulls it off with flying colors.
Don't be fooled by the bonkers plot and wacky tone - Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a tight, sophisticated and frequently ingenious feat of comedic filmmaking. The film is almost 50 years old and it's rarely, if ever, been matched.
