What's It About? Peter Jackson followed up his hugely successful adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings trilogy with an adaptation of Tolkien's earlier, more child-friendly book The Hobbit. In an effort to justify another trilogy, Jackson draws heavily upon secondary Tolkien lore and expands the story so that it fits into his previous cinematic adaptation. Why Was It Controversial? Making a short, fun children's book into a trilogy certainly annoyed more than a handful of Tolkien purists and changed what could have been an entertaining stand-alone movie adaptation into a mammoth undertaking which many found overlong and repetitive. Jackson's decision to shoot in 48fps and replace the costumes and make-up effects of The Lord Of The Rings with far more CGI were two more controversial decisions which left many people cold to the viewing experience - not to mention experiencing excruciating headaches when watching it in 48fps 3D. Still, with just under $3 billion taken at the box office it's highly unlikely either Jackson or his collaborators are too bothered about the controversial decisions they made on their own journey.
