15 Most Controversial Movie Moments Of 2015

Bada** or horrifying? You decide.

With the Internet giving every film fan a loud voice, film criticism is more vocal than ever right now: anyone can post a blog about their sexist/racist/trans-phobic reading of a film, and thanks to social networking, these assertions can spread like wildfire. It seems like almost every major blockbuster these days gets embroiled in some sort of controversy over its characters or a particular scene, because no matter how crowd-pleasing and homogenous a film is, let's face it, it's always going to offend someone. That said, sometimes the complaints feel legitimate or at least significant enough that they're hard to ignore, and so these 15 movies invited their share of discussion and outrage for their writing, casting or overall design. Regardless of your own (possibly less trigger-happy) interpretation of these scenes, here are the 15 most controversial movie moments of 2015...

15. Max Becomes A "Supporting Character" In His Own Movie - Mad Max: Fury Road

The Moment: Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) essentially becomes a supporting player in his own movie, as he spends half of it tied to the front of a car before he teams up with a just-as-badass femme fatale, Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron). Why It's Controversial: On one hand, there are those who think that it's simply fantastic to see a movie where strong men and women are working together to achieve a mutual goal, but within days of Fury Road releasing, men's rights groups complained that they were "tricked" into seeing a feminist propaganda piece posing as a balls-to-the-wall action film. These groups' main chunk of evidence stemmed from Hardy being sidelined at times for Theron's character, and though there are legitimate complaints that Max perhaps should've had a more focal part, the feminist propaganda accusations feel so wildly defensive and off-base.
