Released the same year as Reservoir Dogs, the very low budget ($33,000), black and white Belgian mockumentary Man Bites Dog also made headlines and created debate due to its incredibly graphic content. The film, which shows a filmmaking crew following a fictional serial killer, won awards at Cannes but also faced censorship issues in several countries. While the murders are undoubtedly grisly, it is the matter-of-fact nature of the killer and the way he engages directly with the viewer before, during and after the murders, that upset a lot of people. A challenging rape sequence also proved controversial and was one of the reasons the film ended up being outright banned in Sweden. The film's poster, which depicted the main protagonist firing a handgun and a baby's pacifier and blood emanating from an unseen target, was also censored, replacing the pacifier with a set of dentures.
