15 Most Critically Adored Films 2016 - Ranked
4. Moonlight
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 98% (189 reviews)
Based on award-winning playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney’s In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue, Barry Jenkins’ critically adored Moonlight tells the haunting and bittersweet tale of a young gay black man, Chiron, growing up in South Central Miami.
Visiting the protagonist during three distinct periods during his journey from boyhood to adulthood – first as a kid under his drug-addicted mother’s care, then as a bullied teen and lastly as a drug-dealing adult meeting up with his former flame and friend – the film seamlessly transitions through the three different actors playing Chiron.
Like Manchester By The Sea, Moonlight has too been listed amongst the American Film Institute’s best films of 2016 and is in direct competition with it for a few Golden Globes including Best Drama, Best Director and Best Screenplay.
