4. The Lighthouse - Annihilation

Alex Garland's sci-fi horror film may have been more ambiguous and low-key than many other entries on this list, but its stunning climactic sequence nevertheless defined the word "epic."

Protagonist Lena (Natalie Portman) finally arrives at the core of the DNA-mutating alien structure known as the Shimmer, which resides within a lighthouse situated there.

Inside, she learns that the Shimmer has created a doppelgänger of her husband Kane (Oscar Isaac), after which he kills himself with a phosphorus grenade.

Shen then discovers teammate Ventress (Jennifer Jason Leigh) within a secluded area of the lighthouse, but soon enough she transforms into a nebulous shape, which absorbs a droplet of blood from Lena and creates a metallic clone of her in the process.

What follows is the most insane "dance battle" ever put to film, as Lena attempts to escape the lighthouse but gets locked into a fight with her shiny clone, which mirrors her movements precisely. Lena's only able to secure her escape once she realises she can trick the creature by placing a phosphorus grenade in its hands.

The clone dies and the lighthouse burns down, appearing to also destroy the Shimmer all while Lena looks on at the gorgeously fiery sight before her.

Though Annihilation didn't have a $200 million budget or boast high-wire set-pieces, it still delivered one of the most chilling scenes of the year - or any year, really.
