15 Most Groundbreaking Movies Of The Decade (So Far)

1. Boyhood

What's it about? Richard Linklater's Boyhood follows the lives of Mason Blair and his sister Samantha, their single mother and sometimes absent father over the course of twelve years. From the early years moving home to going to school and moving on to college, Boyhood's narrative encompasses the challenges of growing up, along with the mundanity of everyday life. What makes it groundbreaking? If you haven't heard of Linklater's Boyhood by now you must have been living under a movie-free rock for the last year - shot over a period of 12 years and featuring the same cast throughout, it's a bold experiment in naturalistic storytelling which refuses to pander to melodramatic conventions. While some found the end result to be rather tedious, for others it's a wonderful reflection of how life is for most of us - intimate, frequently uneventful, tender, bittersweet and devoid of the kind of obvious arcs which characters in movies tend to experience. What other groundbreaking movies have there been since 2010? Why not tell us about them in the comments below?
