I Smile Back wasn't just notable for comedian Sarah Silverman taking her clothes off and being sexy and self-destructive, but both were a massive part of the film's appeal. Her quiet suburban rebellion - a silent scream giving away her underlying depression and childhood issues - is about the only notable thing about the film, which has grand ideas but never quite gets them off the ground. The most profoundly memorable sequence of the entire thing also brought together Laney's destructive, deviant personality and her sexuality, as she took it upon herself to defile her child's teddy bear. Like literally - she used the poor (or lucky, however you choose to look at it) - to masturbate in close proximity with said sleeping child.
