6. Don't Lose Your Head - Hereditary

Hereditary will probably go down as the best horror film of the year for a lot of people and part of that comes from its willingness to shock and appall very early on.

At the end of the first act, Peter (Alex Wolff) takes his sister Charlie (Milly Shapiro) to a high school party and when she suffers an allergic reaction to some cake containing nuts, he frantically drives her to hospital despite being stoned.

In a tense scene, the poor girl sticks her head out of the window to get some air, but Peter swerves to avoid a dead animal and she is decapitated by a telephone pole. That then leads to an unflinching shot of her head lying smashed in the road the next morning after he flees the scene, and the prosthetics work deserves extended appreciation.
