15 Most Paused Movie Moments Of 2018
3. The Auto-Violence - Cam
Netflix's Cam won't be remembered as one of the more memorable movies of the year, but it had an interesting enough premise and it plays into both humanity's capacity for the sex industry and our debilitating fears over identity theft. Thanks to an ingenious, nagging What If question (what if someone stole your identity, your log-ins and your actual face) and the helplessness of the situation, it manages to also conjure up some genuine anxious tension.
It all gets a little weird towards the end - though the comment on provocation at the beginning that's inspired by Madeline Brewer's Alice Ackerman faking suicide to make more money is a pretty weird launch-point - when Alice confronts her doppelganger in a one-on-one chat where they play chicken.
As she's seeking to regain her identity, Alice apparently loses her mind and smashes her face into her desk to prompt her double to do the same, breaking her nose horribly. Thanks to some great prosthetics and the "double's" digital secret apparently being revealed, it's a sequence that deserves pausing a few times to fully process it.
