14. Fans Boycott Thor Over Heimdall Being Black
The Controversy: After it was announced that Idris Elba would be playing Heimdall, the typically white God, racists the world over started a campaign to boycott the movie on this basis.
Why It's Ridiculous: Elba really said it best himself: "Thor has a hammer that flies to him when he clicks his fingers. That's OK, but the colour of my skin is wrong?"
Elba's a terrific actor and the consensus among sensible people was that he'd do a killer job in the role regardless of his unconventional appearance compared to the comic. Does it really matter all that much? Are people just looking for something to get mad about? You know the answers.
Elba was completely vindicated when the movie came out: he was great, and the racists ran away quietly with their tails between their legs.
