You wouldn’t expect a revolutionary action movie like The Matrix to contain a scene that is this scary. Sure, The Matrix has got some trippy moments throughput, but unlike the interrogation scene, most don’t cause you to squirm in your seat or audibly shout “NO” at screen.

This scene is disturbing and terrifying in equal measure. The cool calm and collected persona of Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) sets you on edge from the very start as he is never out of control. Even when Neo tries to assert control himself, by giving Smith the finger and demanding his phone call, it has no impact. It just prompts Smith to show Neo what he’s really dealing with, and what he’s dealing with will make you want to run and hide.

The gluing together of his mouth is terrifying enough, and the CGI mixed with the practical effects are incredibly effective, but on top of that, he also has a machine burrows its way inside him through your bellybutton. That’s scary to read as a sentence, watching happen in the actual scene is something else entirely.

As Neo is spread out on the table and his shirt ripped open, you just feel this extreme sense of fear and helplessness. There is literally nothing he can do, there is no way he can win this fight (at least not yet), and the remorseless Agents who treat him with such contempt, know it.
