15 Most Terrifying Sci-Fi Movie Scenes Ever

11. Looper – Disappearing Limbs

Looper Seth Death
TriStar Pictures/FilmDistrict

Looper is a brilliantly made sci-fi film, with some great performances, some pretty cool future tech, and possibly one of the most terrifying uses of time travel ever in film.

This scene involves the character Seth, who’s future self is sent back in time for execution but manages to escape. ‘Young’ Seth is then taken prisoner for failing to ‘close his loop’, at which point the film takes a very dark and scary turn.

At first, future Seth merely notices a scar on his forearm, which is revealed to be a message telling him to turn himself in. This sends the audiences mind racing, but, before they have time to gather their thoughts, the score shifts, and the scene escalates revealing that ‘young’ Seth is being tortured and a result of the time travel, his future self is experiencing the delayed result of that torture.

Body parts begin to disappear in the blink of an eye, starting with his fingers, then his nose. While he races to save himself, he loses the lower part of his leg meaning he can’t reach the breaks and crashes the car he’s driving. As he crawls from the wreck and starts to bang on the door his arms vanish and as he begs them to stop you hear his voice changes, and you realise he’s lost his tongue.
