15 Most Underrated 1970s Movies You Must See

2. Heartworn Highways

Talk about capturing a moment in time... Heartworn Highways won't be to everyone's tastes, since it's about the lives and activities of some of the men who formed the niche outlaw country music movement in the mid-1970s. Although it is essentially a series of scenes briefly profiling the artists followed by performances of songs, it makes for captivating viewing as they are an undeniably fascinating subset of people. Although it was filmed during the last few weeks of 1975 and the first few weeks of 1976 in Texas and Tennessee, the documentary wasn't actually released theatrically until 1981. Since then it has amassed a small cult following, and a follow-up/spinoff documentary is currently in production. The late, great Townes Van Zandt steals the show first with his affable drunken behaviour and then with a powerful rendition of his haunting song 'Waitin' Around to Die', which brings his burly friend and neighbour to tears. I dare you not to shed a tear, either.
