An early film by this fella called Steven Spielberg. You might have heard of him (he made a film about a shark something). Before he was inventing the blockbuster and setting box-office records with his universal brand of family entertainment, Spielberg made a couple of films with a much harder edge. After working in television for a number of years (his road rage TV horror film Duel is well worth checking out), Spielberg made his feature debut with The Sugarland Express. Based on a true story, it tells the story of a wife and her convict husband on the run from the law. Along the way they kidnap a police officer and get up to other assorted hijinks. The direction, cinematography (Vilmos Zsigmond) and music (Spielberg's eternal collaborator John Williams) converge to elevate the rather basic story. A year later, Spielberg would make Jaws and change the history of film forever, but this pre-Jaw treasure should definitely be seen by more people (that means you).
