15 Most Underrated War Movies Of All Time

3. Catch 22

Jarhead Jake Gyllenhaal
Paramount Pictures

Recently rebooted for television by George Clooney’s production company in a Hulu show which garnered even more praise than this 1970 film, this black comedy took the already stellar source material of Joseph Hellers’ novel of the same name and gave it an extra injection of cynical wit.

As a result, the flick from Charlie Wilson’s War director Mike Nichols is one of cinema’s most darkly hilarious and surreal depictions of war, inspiring the later likes of Buffalo Soldiers and Jarhead with its incisive criticism of both the military and the trigger-happy governments backing them up.

The film was all but forgotten upon release due to going head to head with Robert Altman’s more famous anti-war effort, the fellow TV-show-spin-off-creating MASH, but this one is a necessary watch for anyone thinking that’s honour (or even just some common sense) in war.
