15 Most Unexpectedly Depressing Movies Of All-Time

5. Marley & Me (2008)

Chances are that even if you haven't seen Marley & Me, you know what happens in the end, right? When Marley & Me first hit cinemas back in 2008, though, people who hadn't read the book on which it was based didn't know a thing of its tragic ending. Influenced by the marketing and a trailer that poised the film as one filled with loveable hi-jinks and a light-hearted tone, millions of movie-goers were shocked to leave the theatre in such a state of heartbroken disillusionment. The film, a broad comedy that uses the titular pooch, Marley, as the narrative device in which to frame the movie, doesn't do much else other than deal with hilarious dog antics as the main couple (played by Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston) experience the trials and tribulations of life. And then, light tone be damned, it happens: Marley freakin' dies. Animal death is never anything but painful to watch, but this one... this one is something else. We've watched a whole movie about this mutt, and he dies? The scene in which Marley is euthanised with Owen Wilson at his side is torture. This film should be illegal.
