12. Metropolis
The original sci-fi movie, Metropolis has been so influential on later films that if you watch it for the first time now it almost seems to be an amalgamation of other movies. The most expensive movie ever made at the time, Metropolis was initially met with mixed reviews but is now considered to be one of the masterpieces of the silent era. Metropolis tells the story of a future society where the gap between the rich and the poor has grown to such an extant that the working class rarely even leaves their underground factories. From a visual standpoint, Metropolis was groundbreaking. Director Fritz Lang shot Metropolis on huge sets that were deliberately abstract and disproportionate in order to set the tone for the movie. The architectural style that is used throughout the film has been the model for many future science fiction films such as Dark City, Blade Runner, and Tim Burton's Batman series and another movies heavily influenced by Metropolis is Star Wars.
