14. Metropolis (1927)
My personal all-time favorite film, Metropolis was also the first science fiction epic. It used ground-breaking special effects and became the first film to feature a transformation scene, and also the first to bring a robot to life on screen (both seen above). Additionally, the city skylines were breathtaking, with numerous shots being on par with the first Star Wars film which wouldn't be made for another 50 years. Finally, the underground city is still an awe-inspiring sight, particularly the scene where a young man watches a giant machine malfunction, killing several workers. At that point, in his mind it transforms into a giant altar to Moloch, the Ammonite's object of worship that they would sacrifice newborn children to.
