15 Must-See Blumhouse Movies

5. Oculus

Sinister Ethan Hawke
Relativity Media

Oculus is one insanely nasty horror film.

It might be largely devoid of gore, but it will make your stomach turn just as much as the average torture-porn flick and the reason for this is that Oculus plays with your mind in truly disturbing ways. It's full of horrific imagery, pathos-filled death scenes and it's nigh-on-impossible to tell what's real and what isn't.

In other words, Oculus is exactly what a psychological horror film should be. It's an absolute skin-crawler of a movie that also boasts four great leading performances from both the adult and child actors playing the two main siblings and great direction from Mike Flanagan.

Flanagan has become one of contemporary horror's most reliable directors, which isn't surprising to anyone who saw Oculus, since it was clearly the work of someone who truly understood what makes horror films scary.

If only all those other supernatural horror films from this era had been as well-made as this. If only.
