15 Popular Movies Which Were Notoriously Difficult To Produce
7. Titanic (1997)
Titanic is a modern Hollywood epic and a tale of romance and tragedy. James Cameron studied the real thing in depth to make sure all stunts and characterisations were to the letter. Whilst he succeeded in this department, he was an evil director.
Cameron went severely over budget with production and ironically, the replica ship cost more than the real one did. The sinking of it was done in real time and the whole stunt was as long as the original event. This meant everyone adhered to a strict time schedule.
Extras did not have a nice experience working on the film as the water was truly freezing. James would fire anyone if they dared take a bathroom break so most of them were forced to urinate in the tank. Production had to grind to a halt anyway because many actors got colds, hypothermia and kidney infections.
Kate Winslet has also spoken candidly of her downhearted involvement filming for Titanic. Winslet was victim to many injuries during a lot of her stunts, including bruising and a chipped bone in her elbow. She also refused to wear a wetsuit and ended up getting pneumonia.
Working on Titanic was such a misery that an angry crewmember spiked the team’s chowder with a hallucinogen and over fifty people had to be rushed to the hospital. It was yet another block in Cameron’s militant schedule.
