15 Predictions For Next Summer's Biggest Movies
12. Dunkirk Earns Christopher Nolan His First Best Director Oscar Nomination
The Prediction: After chipping away as one of Hollywood's most confident and reliable blockbuster directors of the last decade-plus, Christopher Nolan finally wins over his filmmaking peers by earning a Best Director nomination for his upcoming war epic Dunkirk.
The directing branch naturally learns towards older men who may have turned their nose up at Nolan's Batman in particular, but also the sci-fi fancies of Inception and Interstellar. A war movie, however, is much more their speed, and if Nolan lives up to expectations, this could be the perfect storm that gets him that well-earned nod.
Why It Might Not Happen: As stated, history doesn't dictate the Academy having much love for Nolan's directorial style, which some have deemed too cold and detached to merit the highest honour in the industry. Plus, Nolan may have a stigma as a blockbuster filmmaker that more prejudiced members of AMPAS just can't shake.
