15 Radical Superheroes To Diversify The MCU
11. The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl
The adventures of Doreen Green, aka Squirrel Girl, have been critically acclaimed since the character, treated mostly as a one-note joke since her creation in 1991, was revived for her own series in 2015 with writer Ryan North and artist Erica Henderson.
Earnest, forthright and geeky, Squirrel Girl is adorably perky - and that ‘unbeatable’ gimmick has been proved right more often than not, with the character being written to come out on top, in typically tongue-in-cheek style, against true heavy hitters like Thanos and Galactus.
One of Marvel's most popular characters, Squirrel Girl is also touted as a fantastic example of body positivity in comic books, given her realistically proportioned figure compared to some of the more pneumatic female heroes on Marvel’s roster.
Long considered one of the more inspired possibilities for adaptation into the MCU, on small screen or big, Anna Kendrick was being talked up for the role as long ago as 2016 before Milana Vayntrub was cast in the TV version of Marvel’s New Warriors team. However, that show lost its network in late 2017 and still doesn’t seem to have a home.
Regardless, the relentlessly upbeat Squirrel Girl could easily become the next Ant-Man: an oddball breakout character capable of crossing over to mainstream superstardom.
