15 Recent Horror Movies Destined To Become Halloween Essentials

1. It Follows

Curse Of Chucky
Northern Lights Films

It Follows is a horror movie for a whole generation to cherish. Something new, fresh and, ultimately, very scary.

Part stalker feature, part parable of what, nobody can quite pinpoint, the film's concept is a talking point alone, where sexual encounters become games of tag as a slow-moving spirit stalks anyone not quick enough to pass on 'it'. It's a film student's sticky dream.

There is something timeless about David Robert Mitchell's film, where classically-shot visuals jar into date thanks to a synthy score. You're never sure when his film his set - protagonist Jaime and her mystery man catch a retro viewing of Charade, so clearly not the sixties - but, aptly, It Follows feels staged at a time not long before our own present.

Maika Monroe is a standout as Jaime, struggling to follow the teachings of her infector and, like us, terrified that something inhuman will come lumbering after her at any moment. Once you lay eyes on the tall man, you'll get the gist of how effective the fright pieces are in this film, a moment easily ranked as one of the scariest in modern cinema.

Premise and composition aside, It Follows is a great film to watch with the lights out and the sound cranked up. This isn't just destined to be a Halloween classic, it's also the best horror movie of the decade so far.
