10. Red - Us
Many of the talk around the Oscar's was of the disappointment that Lupita Nyong'o had not received a nomination for the Best Actress category. Considering Lupita plays not just one, but two leading roles in this film, and in many scenes she has to have imaginary conversations with her other 'self', it's hard to argue against this disappointment.
Following the Wilson's on their vacation, they become the victims of themselves. Literally. The plot unfurls to reveal an entire underground society of doppelgangers that have risen to the surface under the leadership of Red, the doppelganger to Lupita's other role as the matriarch of the Wilson family, Adelaide.
In their first confrontation, Red and Adelaide discuss the disparages of their lives and Red's aims become clear: the doppelgangers must rise up, kill their other, and integrate into society as themselves. Critics have suggested underlying themes of a xenephobic fear of the 'other', but really, I would need a much bigger section if we were to divulge every individual perception of the film's messages.
Lupita plays an extremely compelling defensive mother and raspy psychopath, and her performances are pushed to even greater heights when it is revealed that Red is actually the original, and Adelaide is the doppelganger. A truly remarkable performance.
