15 Scariest Stephen King Movie Moments

3. The Doppelganger - 1408

1408 might well be the most underrated of all Stephen King adaptations, and it's perhaps because it's such a simple, strange concept. It's essentially just a one room movie, as John Cusack visits a supposedly cursed hotel room to prove there's nothing supernatural about it. Naturally, he's wrong and he ends up being tormented and unable to leave, spiralling into a purgatory sort of state that threatens to push him towards despair and suicide.

Cusack's Mike Enslin is a study in a hero watching his grip on reality fall apart despite his frantic best efforts, and this marks his true break from reality. He cries for help out of the window towards what he thinks is a potential saviour over the road, only to watch the dark figure mirror his actions, until he realises he's seeing a creepy doppelganger.

And then to top it off, you get a good old fashioned jump scare piled on top as well...
