Many viewers of the new animated Spider-Man movie noted how odd it was that the Spanish-language conversations between Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and his mother Rio (Luna Lauren Velez) weren't accompanied by subtitles.

This wasn't merely for the sake of laziness or because the incidental dialogue wasn't terribly important, but because producer and co-writer Phil Lord wanted to accurately represent Miles' life to the audience. Miller said:

"I grew up in a bilingual household in the bilingual city of Miami where you hear Spanish all over the place, and it’s not particularly remarkable...It was important for us to hear Spanish and not necessarily have it subtitled. It’s just part of the fabric of Miles’ community and family life."

Given that Lord is himself born to a Cuban mother and an American father, it's yet another reason why he was the perfect choice to write Miles Morales' story for the big screen.
