John Krasinski's terrific horror flick is characterised by its protagonists' silence, with the presence of sound-detecting extraterrestrial monsters forcing the central family to communicate via American Sign Language.

When Krasinski was editing the film, he actually didn't bother subtitling the ASL, and it wasn't until a month before A Quiet Place was completed that it was decided the movie would play better with subs.

The scene that convinced Krasinski to make the change involved Lee (Krasinski) giving his daughter (Millicent Simmonds) a modified cochlear implant.

Without subtitles, the scene was decidedly more vague and ambiguous, yet given its ultimately vital nature in the story, it was crucial that audiences understood what was going on.
