15 Terrible Movies That Actually Improve Good Ones
2. Alice In Wonderland Improves Edward Scissorhands
The Bad
Tim Burton has now become such a parody of himself that it's hard not to believe he's been replaced by an alien or replicant or some other sci-fi copycat. His creative partnership with Johnny Depp has gone from being a hub of Gothic beauty to a groan-inducing slog.
Alice in Wonderland was critically panned but because it made a gazillion dollars it is still considered a success and was given a sequel. Crazy business. The film features the Burton-esque curly trees and buildings but other than that is like a film made by someone trying to ape Tim Burton's style.
An uninspired, three dimensional migraine Alice In Wonderland lacks any of the substance of early Burton and ultimately isn't anything more than a colourful kids movie.
How It Improves Edwards Scissorhands
If you want a Burton movie with the substance you expect then you don't get much better than Edward Scissorhands. Imbued with all the eerie, dark undertones that made the film-maker so beloved, Edward Scissorhands is essential Burton viewing. A tragedy that can be watched as a child, but one that deepens and transforms when viewed through the eyes of an adult.
A Gothic fairy tale so unique you'll wonder how he has gotten to where he is now and you will weep as you watch the majesty of Edward ice-sculpting as his forbidden love dances in the moonlight under the blanket of snow his Scissorhands create.
A living snow globe containing more creativity in those few minutes than the entirety of Alice in Wonderland which frankly looks like Burton ate a paint palette and then regurgitated it on screen.
