15 Things In Harry Potter That Don't Make Sense

10. Why Doesn't Slughorn Know What A Dentist Is?

In the muggle world, there are certain things that simply don't translate into the wizarding world. Ron has no idea how to use a phone, Arthur Weasley asks Harry the function of a rubber duck, and Horace Slughorn seemingly doesn't know what a dentist is.

In Half-Blood Prince, when Hermione tells the professor of her parent's profession, he has no idea what to make of it, even going as far as asking if it is considered dangerous. This would suggest that dentists are one of these aspects of muggle life that never made it to the wizarding world, but that can't be true.

In Chamber of Secrets, the device Molly Weasley has to tell her the whereabouts of her family shows 'Dentist' as an option. This, paired with the 'Surgical and Dental' sign that can be seen in Diagon Alley in Philosopher's Stone confirm the profession does exist. It makes no sense then, that a man like Slughorn could go so long completely oblivious to such an everyday aspect of life.

Having said that, there really isn't any need in the wizarding world for dentists anyway because, well... magic. Thanks to Madam Pomfrey and Hermione Granger in the books, it's established that there are spells that can simply fix teeth. This happens after Malfoy turns Hermione's teeth into fangs, and the Hogwarts resident healer brings them back to just a bit smaller than normal. Why then have a whole profession dedicated to something any witch or wizard could do with the right spell?
