15 Things You Didn't Know About When Harry Met Sally
7. When Tom Hanks Could Have Been Harry Burns
It’s not really surprising that Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan weren’t the ultimate first choices for the film’s leading romance. But it does make us wonder just who could have been the sarcastic Harry Burns or the picky Sally Albright?
For Harry, Tom Hanks was a potential but he turned it down because he thought the role was “too lightweight”. Michael Keaton was also considered, as were Bill Murray, Jeff Bridges and Harrison Ford.
In terms of Sally, 1980s teen queen Molly Ringwald was one of the main choices but producers felt she was a bit young for the role and filming would have collided with her busy schedule anyway. However, Ringwald did eventually get to play Ms Albright in the stage version, on London’s West End.
