13. Violated Angels (1967)
Yes it is pinku time again - this time the most famous offering from controversial director Koji Wakamatsu - a nasty little piece called Violated Angels. A pervert gains entrance to a residence for nurses. He goes around killing them in a depraved manner and all the nurses virtually accept their fate! Some of them try pleading with the killer but that's no good - jumping out of the window would have been a far more sensible plan of action. Eventually the police twig on to the fact they have a problem in their hands. Filmed in black and white, except for some colour shots of what the pervert protaganist does to the nurses, Violated Angels is Japanese cinema's answer to the case of Richard Speck who murdered eight nurses in 1966. The murders in the film mainly happen off screen, but there is such an air of misery and helplessness that the film is a total downer. Unlike other Pinku films, it tries to be serious and make a comment about Japanese society, but this just comes across as pompous and meaningless after the dark material we have been exposed to. Running just under an hour, Violated Angels is a depraved glimpse into hell, but it is a must see for Pinku fans.
