15 Truly Terrible Villainous Performances From Awesome Actors
1. Willem Dafoe - Speed 2: Cruise Control
Speed 2: Cruise Control is one of the worst sequels of all time; a soul-crushingly tedious action movie which inexplicably takes place on a slow-moving cruise ship instead of something that's actually, you know, speedy. The films also has a ghastly villain that is a painfully humiliating role for Willem Dafoe.
Dafoe is a very strong character actor who deserved so much better than this. A hammy hacker who wants to get revenge on the company that owns the ship purely because they fired him when he had copper poisoning is a role even the world's best actor would struggle to pull off, but surely he could've done better than this?
Dafoe really embarrasses himself more than is necessary. He gives a hammy and unhinged performance that's so cringe-worthy it puts Nicolas Cage to shame, while any emotion or fear is non-existent in this performance. His godawful evil grins throughout this movie will be good for internet memes, but that's the only possible good that could come out of this career-worst turn.
It's hard to think of any other time a good actor has been so badly wasted on such an awful villain. Poor, poor Willem Dafoe.
