15 Unexpectedly Awesome 2014 Movies Everyone Thought Would Suck

2. Edge Of Tomorrow

Why It Should Have Sucked: For starters, Edge of Tomorrow isn't a particularly good title, and the marketing campaign for this movie was absolutely awful. It categorically failed to explain the plot in a logical way, and as such, it's no surprise that the movie wasn't quite the box office smash Warner Bros. were hoping for. Why It Was Awesome: Edge of Tomorrow was, however, a massive critical success, with director Doug Liman taking the Groundhog Day premise and transposing it rather ingeniously onto a sci-fi war film schematic. With unexpected humour, excellent chemistry between Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt (whose sexy yoga position repeated through the movie is enough to make most men in the audience squirm), insane action and some of the year's best editing, this is a mighty blockbuster package boasting plenty of brains and brawn. Though its middling box office resulted in the movie being re-branded as "Live Die Repeat", whatever it's called, it's destined to be regarded as one of the decade's strongest sci-fi flicks, and a fine example of how poorly a studio can sell a movie to audiences.
