15 Unexpectedly Awesome 2014 Movies Everyone Thought Would Suck
11. The Rewrite
Why It Should Have Sucked: Yet another Hugh Grant comedy directed by that guy (Marc Lawrence) who seems to write and direct everything Grant is in these days? Yeah, this'll be good... Why It Was Awesome: Despite having two dubious prior efforts to their pairing (Two Weeks Notice and Did You Hear About the Morgans?), The Rewrite completely blew all expectations out of the water, delivering an unexpectedly smart and hilarious romantic comedy, finding Grant at his most effortlessly charming in years. What really works here is placing Grant in an American setting, whereby his dry sense of humour is thrown into a blender with the more outrageous style of his American co-stars such as love interest Marisa Tomei, and supporting players Alison Janney and J.K. Simmons. Considering that Grant's character is a struggling screenwriter, the movie smartly places a number of amusing movie references throughout, and perhaps most surprising of all, Grant's character has more to him than merely being a bumbling British idiot. As a result, the drama is infinitely more satisfying, and the movie as a whole is much better for it.
