15 Unexpectedly Awesome 2014 Movies Everyone Thought Would Suck
8. Camp X-Ray
Why It Should Have Sucked: The girl from Twilight (Kristen Stewart) playing a Guantanamo Bay guard? Yeah, like that's believable. She's surely going to sink what could have been an interesting character-driven drama, right? Why It Was Awesome: Put aside any prejudice you might have towards Stewart and just consider that she might not be the terrible actress every Internet meme tells you she is, because her work in low-flying indie drama Camp X-Ray is significantly better than your wildest expectations. Stewart is in fact perfectly cast as a nervy newbie at the detention facility, who slowly begins to form a bond with one of the inmates who may or may not be innocent of terrorism-related offences. Stewart is in practically every scene, and as such has to carry the emotional and dramatic weight of the entire movie, which she does with a superbly vulnerable, nuanced performance. It doesn't say anything new about Guantanamo, but it does serve as a reminder that Barack Obama still hasn't kept to his promise and shut the brutal facility down.
