15 Upcoming Movies That Might Be Surprisingly Awesome

6. MIB

Men In Black
Columbia

Release Date: June 14, 2019

Why It Should Suck: Hollywood loves to repackage classic, decades-old properties for a new generation because it's an easier and safer bet than actually coming up with something original. Naturally, it often results in a desperate, uninspired dud.

Given that the last Men in Black movie only released back in 2012, it does seem a bit soon for a reboot, and many fans have already likened this to the ill-fated 2016 Ghostbusters retooling, which shoved name actors into a movie they weren't necessarily well-suited for, while boasting a ginormous $144 million budget.

MIB is being written by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, the minds behind both Iron Man and Transformers: The Last Knight, which makes it hard to have a real bead on how things might be shaping up.

Plus, why make this when that much-discussed MIB/Jump Street crossover sounded so much more interesting?

Why It Might Be Awesome: The new MIB movie has been confirmed to co-star Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, and given how entertaining their pairing was in Thor: Ragnarok, we know the film at least won't be left wanting for chemistry.

The project has also signed a rock solid director in F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton, The Fate of the Furious) and Liam Neeson will appear in a supporting role as the head of MIB's UK branch. Nice.

The early word is that Sony Pictures is looking to expand the series' scope into a globe-trotting adventure franchise, and they've certainly got some compelling ingredients in the mix to make it work. Fingers crossed.
