15 Worst Comic Book Movie Sequels Ever
6. Superman III
As long as there are comic book movies - hell, as long as there are blockbusters - there will be comic relief characters, and that's fine when they're well written. Unfortunately, that's a rare thing, and way too often they're given way too much focus, ruining the balance of films and distracting from the main event. That is very much the case of Superman III, whose ludicrous plot feels like it has missed its calling as a Direct-To-DVD sequel.
Superman III wasn't entirely a disaster for Warner Bros (hence it inspiring a sequel), but comparing it to either version of Superman II is like comparing steak to giblets. It's unfavourable no matter how you dress it up, and most of that comes down to Richard Lester (the man who profited when Richard Donner was kicked off Superman II), who wasn't fit to serve the franchise.
In place of Lex Luthor, Lester brought in his three daft villains, failing to make any of them as interesting as when Superman goes grumpy and fights himself. And even that small flash of genius is botched.
