15 Worst Movies That Somehow Won Oscars
7. My Cousin Vinny (1992)
Won For: Best Supporting Actress
The very idea that Marissa Tomei was handed her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for My Cousin Vinny in error says everything you need to know about the film's suitability to winning awards. But the fact that she was even nominated in the first place should be considered one of the most curious cases of over-inflated reactions in Hollywood history.
My Cousin Vinny is not unwatchable, and nor is it a particularly poor watch: it's just as light-weight and silly a premise as the likes of Uncle Buck and Legally Blonde. It's a fish out of water comedy with entertaining performances and the kind of story you would struggle to remember the ins and outs of even after multiple viewings. It's the epitome of disposable entertainment.
But it is as much an Oscar-worthy film as it is an antique Victorian teapot.
