15 'WTF Did I Just Pay To See' Horror Movies

7. Titane

After tackling cannibalism with her debut feature, Raw, Julie Ducournau's made the protagonist of her second feature film a serial killer named Alex (Agathe Rousselle) who has sex with cars. Well, she's certainly one for breaking taboos wide open, that's for sure.

A film that makes Raw, itself a thoroughly shocking film, look quaint by comparison, Titane is filled with grisly violence, discomforting body horror and, of course, vehicular sex scenes. Throughout the film, Alex seems to be transforming into a human-metal hybrid and at the film's conclusion, she dies giving birth to a mutant baby with patches of titanium on its skin... yeah, it's definitely one of the weirdest films ever to win the Palme D'Or at Cannes.

Titane's WTF-ness isn't always to its benefit necessarily. It is a pretty incoherent movie which can't seem to decide what it's actually about and the film does sometimes seem more interested in being transgressive than exploring its characters. It winning the Palme d'Or, especially when it was up against Drive My Car and The Worst Person in the World, was ridiculous.

Still, flaws and all, Titane is a powerful, admirably audacious work that makes for one of the most out-there horror films in recent memory. One can only imagine with a mixture of trepidation and excitement what effed-up-ness Ducournau has lined up for movie number three.
