16 Biggest Oscar Upsets Of The 21st Century

11. Best Animated Feature - Wallace And Gromit: Curse Of The Were-Rabbit

The Rightful Winner: Corpse Bride

Nick Park and Aardman are responsible for bringing plasticine to the mainstream. They are proud, self-made champions of the British film industry and have rightfully won many accolades for their work.

In 2006, however, they absolutely shouldn't have taken the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

While Wallace and Gromit will always hold a special place in the heart of UK citizens, it's not a particularly controversial thing to admit that Curse Of The Were-Rabbit is amongst their weaker adventures. Held up against classics like the Wrong Trousers and a Close Shave, there's no competition.

This would have been evident even if they weren't up against a masterpiece from gothic animation wizard, Tim Burton. Aardman's folksy charms may be enough to carry a film like Were-Rabbit into watchable territory but when compared with Corpse Bride, watchable just doesn't cut it.

The world Burton created in his macabre tale of love after death is as compelling as the story he weaves throughout it. There's so much more depth to the tale of Victor and Emily than there is in a film revolving around a vegetable craving monster, Corpse Bride is ambitious with both its visuals and narrative and emerges the superior movie because of it.

It's a shame that small matters like quality don't play a deciding factor in who gets the award.
