16 Great Recent Movies The Oscars Outrageously Snubbed

5. Straight Outta Compton

Nominated For:

Best Original Screenplay, which it lost to Spotlight.

The biggest casualty of #OscarsSoWhite in 2016 for sure. Most of the awards-type movies in 2015 weren't exactly Oscar-worthy, but this one absolutely was. It was always wishful thinking since it's a biopic about a foul-mouthed, anti-Establishment black Gangsta Rap group, but anything should be able to win Oscars no matter what it's about.

Straight Outta Compton is one of the best films of 2015, and how good it actually will leave you stunned. The performances are fantastic, the direction from F. Gary Gray is excellent (Look out for a certain long-take scene) and the script is both endlessly cool and dramatically powerful. It even boasts 2 of the most emotional death scenes in recent memory. Who'd have thought?

The film being criticized for leaving things out might have spoiled its chances as well, but since the Academy nominates historically inaccurate films all the time, that shouldn't have been an issue.

Given that it was such an awesome film, this deserved more than a solitary screenwriting nod. That was well-deserved (Although Spotlight was the right winner), but a Best Picture nod, a Best Director nod and more technical nods would have not only been welcome, but expected. That's not even mentioning the great, Oscar-worthy cast.

How on earth did Jason Mitchell not get a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role as Eazy E?
