The Pitch: A prequel trilogy to the Star Wars franchise, revealing the circumstances which led Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen) to become Darth Vader.

What Happened?: Pretty much every Star Wars fan on Earth was hype for The Phantom Menace back in 1999, yet its excessive reliance on visual effects, cringe-worthy dialogue, over-explanation of the Force and mediocre villain made it colossally disappointing.

The sequel, Attack of the Clones, was somehow even worse, serving as the most boring Star Wars movie to date while subjecting audiences to the painfully awful love-in between Anakin and Padme (Natalie Portman).

Things upticked a little with 2005's Revenge of the Sith, thanks to the undeniable intrigue of Anakin finally becoming Vader, but with the entire trilogy encompassed, it's safe to say that Vader's creation was more underwhelming than exciting or enriching.

The films made their billions of dollars regardless of fan response, but George Lucas had the chance to deliver an epoch-making cinematic trilogy here, and instead settled for milking the merchandising teat, leaning on lazy green screen tech and surrounding himself with yes-men who wouldn't tell him how awful most of the dialogue was.
