17 Movies That Critics And Fans Just Didn't Agree On

If there's one movie genre you can count on to sucker in audiences while disgusting critics, it's the tear-jerking drama. Just look at The Notebook, which rocks a mind-boggling 7.9 IMDB average (after almost 450,000 votes, no less) next to a mere 5.7 from critics.

There are far more egregious examples, though, such as most Nicholas Sparks adaptations getting a healthy 2-3.0 audience boost, yet in recent years, nothing has been embraced with as baffling warmth by audiences as 2016's Will Smith-starring drama Collateral Beauty.

Widely panned by critics - scoring just 14% approval - for its manipulative, overly sentimental, Oscar-baiting tone and weirdly mean-spirited plot twist, audiences nevertheless opened their hearts to the drama. This was no doubt aided by the movie releasing over the Christmas period, when viewers are typically at their most forgiving and least demanding.

It also doesn't hurt that Smith is another actor like Adam Sandler whose presence and personality alone boosts the rating of almost any movie he stars in (see: Seven Pounds, Bright).
