17 Oscar Winning Films You Can Watch On Netflix

11. My Left Foot

Won: Best Actor (Daniel Day-Lewis) and Supporting Actress (Brenda Fricker), 1990 The first film to win Daniel Day-Lewis a Lead Actor Oscar (he now has three, the only man in history to do so), Jim Sheridan's My Left Foot is the story of Christy Brown, an Irishman born with cerebral palsy. Through the titular limb, he learns how to paint and write. One of the most successful Irish films ever made, My Left Foot (subtitled: The Story of Christy Brown) was nominated for five Oscars at the 1990 Academy Awards, said nominations comprising solely of the Big Five: Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Screenplay. Aside from Day-Lewis' win, My Left Foot also saw actress Brenda Fricker take home an award (the only other one the film won on the night), this time for Lead Actress, the performer playing the determined mother of Brown's character. Best known elsewhere as the Pigeon Lady from Home Alone 2: Lost In New York, Fricker pretty much came and went with Sheridan's film here. The same can't be said for Day Lewis, who has since gone on to become the most lauded actor of his generation. He holds the record for Best Actor wins, and his appearance in a film usually creates waves, such is its rarity (he only has 28 acting credits to his name; Fricker has 85).
